I said during my Sage Barista Express review that I was really impressed with this machine in this regard, it was the easiest machine I’d used up to that point in terms of milk texturing, the potential results were really high, but there’s more room to maneuver, it’s more forgiving than most other steam wands I’ve used – and the Bambino plus I think is very similar to the barista express, only slightly quicker, and I think slightly easier too. On most jugs I find you need to fill them to just below the indentation of the spout, and with 500ml jugs (which I prefer to use) this will mean that if you’re drinking 6 or 8 ounce drinks, you’ll probably have some milk left in the jug after pouring. It has a PID (digital temperature control), which you’re very unlikely to find on other cheaper (or even more expensive) consumer level machines. After steaming milk, give the wand a wipe & then instead of pushing it back into position above the drip tray, just stick a jug or a cup, a jar, a jug or something similar under the wand to save having to go & empty the drip tray straight away. As I mentioned earlier, machines like the Gaggia Classic and Rancilio Silvia have to be modded in order to benefit from PID control, so the fact that this machine, at this price point, as a PID, is a really bit plus for the Bambino. Yes indeed, we are very careful to push the wand down, allow it to self purge (and I can see 4 decent jets coming out the nozzle so no need for the needle trick), but then, to be extra sure (because quite often see that the residue it squirts out after foaming the milk is still quite milky, implying there is milk drawn up inside the tube) we put some clean fresh water in the rinsed milk jug and let it do a quick little steam and purge of that, so it is doubly clear. If you don’t know the retailer though, have a quick look at trust pilot, as there are a few firms grey importing these machines and others online, claiming to be within the UK & they’re not, and you’ll see some flaming reviews about poor customer service & no UK warranty. Delivering barista-quality performance using a 54mm portafilter with 19 grams for full flavour and automatic milk texturing. Density light at 3 and temp light at 2. If you invest in a higher quality espresso grinder, along with the pressure mod and the PID, then overall you have a machine which in all likelihood would be quite a bit more capable when it comes to espresso quality, than the Bambino. So why these guys didn’t think to add just maybe 1cm of height to this tiny machine, by designing a drip tray which uses all of the depth of the machine, I’m not sure. You can cancel it by pressing any of the flashing buttons, but it’ll prompt you again the next time you turn on the Bambino. The grinder your local coffee shop uses would no doubt be good enough to get good results, but unless you took your espresso machine in with you so they could dial it in with the specific beans they’re using, it’s unlikely that the grind is going to be spot on, so you’re going to end up with either under or over extracted coffee even with pre-ground from a local coffee shop. The machine has an integrated semiautomatic steaming wand to compliment its semiautomatic brewer. thanks chris. Thanks! i have recently put the machine through a cleaning cycle and since then the creme has reduced and the shot time seems less also. The guys who design these machines are very clever, I’ve met one of them, and I know this is a team of people who pride themselves on going much further than most other coffee machine designers, even inventing a lot of the parts required to make their ideas possible. Another point about pre-infusion, a common question is whether the pre-infusion time should be added to, or included in the total shot time, and it’s the latter. If you’re looking for around 30 seconds for instance, to extract the desired amount of liquid espresso from the ground coffee at the brew ratio you’re using, for example 2:1 (19g dry ground coffee:38g liquid espresso), then this 30 seconds is the total shot time including the pre-infusion time. grind size, tamp pressure, dose or pre-infusion time. The classic isn’t for everyone, it’s definitely not as user friendly and as beginner friendly as the Bambino, but for anyone who sees themselves as a home barista, and is focussed on being able to pull the very best quality shots possible, and doesn’t mind doing a bit of modding, at £399 – I think the Classic is a better bet.
